Easy General Tso Chicken Pinterest

Easy Chinese General Tso Chicken recipe, crispy deep-fried chicken pieces coated in a sweet and spicy General Tso sauce, an easy recipe that tastes better homemade than from any restaurant or take away!

I very often make that kind of crispy Chinese chicken at home, be it sweet and sour, lemon or orange, or this General Tso, we love crispy chicken and paired with some Jasmine or Basmati rice, they make such delicious and exotic meals.

General Tso chicken is easy and quick to make:

  1. Combine all the ingredients for the sauce, set aside
  2. Heat about 3 inches of oil, meanwhile cut the chicken breasts or deboned chicken thighs to bite-sized pieces, add them to a bowl, add all the ingredients for the batter, toss to coat, fry until golden
  3. Add all the ingredients for the sauce into a pan, bring to boil, add the slurry, cook one more minute, do not overcook or your sauce will be too reduced to coat all the chicken, add the fried chicken, toss to coat with the sauce and plate
  4. Perfect with steamed rice!

Can I make this dish ahead?

  • You can fry your chicken a few hours in advance in batches, set aside on your counter, when almost ready to serve, re-heat your oil, fry the whole batch about 3 minutes, be careful not to overflow the oil
  • You can’t make the sauce in advance as it’s sticky and syrupy, it will set in the pan but it’s really so quickly made

Recipe :

Ingredients:

Chicken:

1-pound (450 g.) Chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces

Batter:

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp white pepper

1 cup corn starch

1 egg

Sauce:

1/2 cup water

1 tbsp. cooking wine

1 tbsp. soy sauce

1 tbsp. rice vinegar

1 tbsp. oyster sauce

1/4 cup honey

5 dried red chilies

2 thinly chopped garlic cloves, to be added later

Slurry:

1 tsp cornstarch

1 tbsp. water

Other:

A quart of vegetable oil for frying

2 tsp sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions:

Into a bowl, add all the ingredients for the sauce except the garlic, stir, set aside

Into a wok or high sided frying pan, heat up about three inches of oil

Into a medium bowl, add the chicken and all the ingredients for the batter, toss to coat with your hands, it’s really the best way, once the oil is hot enough, fry the chicken in batches until golden and crispy, set aside on a plate lined with paper towels

Into a pan, add the chopped garlic and all the ingredients for the sauce, bring to boil, add the slurry, cook one more minute, do not overcook or the sauce will thin out too much, add the chicken, toss to coat with the sauce and plate, sprinkle some sesame seeds

Serve immediately with some basmati or jasmine rice

Enjoy!
